Photo of the Day
I made it! Out of the dingy, snow-clogged D.C. streets. Out of a sunless January and February that felt like a dark closet. Out of the soul-crushing traffic that shaped my zoo-eat-climbing gym schedule.

If baby leopards aren’t cute enough for you, how about baby clouded leopards born on Valentine’s Day?! At birth, these cubs each weighed just over a half pound. For thirty years, the Zoo has pioneered the science of breeding clouded leopards, and successfully tackled the many challenges involved in saving this endangered species listed as “vulnerable to extinction”. Check out the Zoo’s flickr page for more photos. There’s also a clouded leopard web cam!

Obama Prays for the Dead-President Barack Obama listens to the song Amazing Grace before speaking at III Corps & Fort Hood Memorial Ceremony at Fort Hood, Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 in Killeen, Texas. The thousands of people in attendance mourned the loss of the 13 killed in the shootings at Fort Hood. Some of the families of the dead as well as some of the injured attended the ceremony.
The WHPNA’s Eyes of History contest awarded the Washington Post’s Melina Mara first place in the Presidential category, for this photo. I asked Melina for advice at a shoot once and this is what she said: in 10 seconds, you should have 8 angles to shoot from. So, I’m guessing it took her about 2 seconds to envision this shot. Pretty impressive. Obama’s head looks so small and the helmet-gun-boot combo is so otherworldly it’s awesome. Other WPOW members also won awards, including Katie Falkenberg, Andrea Bruce, Carol Guzy, Alexis Glenn, Melissa Golden, Mary Calvert, Sarah L Voisin, Allison Shelley, Toni L Sandys, Astrid Reicken and Linda Davidson. Check out the winners on the WHPNA’s Eyes of History web site!
I expected the testosterone, the short shorts, and the Daniel Woods paparazzi, but I didn’t expect to have so much fun at ABS Nationals—Saturday’s comp at Sportrock was super fun! Between the colored lights, crowd-friendly screens and intimate space, the atmosphere was a perfect blend of community psyche. The problems were well-set, interesting and tested various climbing talents. Competition bouldering has clearly pulled itself out of the post-PCA lull. Check out these photos from iso and throughout the comp!
Ah, the Turning Point! We had so much fun this day. We ditched our cars in the Chatauqua parking lot, hiked up to the Satellites and frolicked in the flatirons. And Ace Kvale is an awesome photographer. Within minutes of meeting him, I pretty much forgot he was taking photos, the mark of a true pro. His mellow vibe immediately set us at ease, something I’ve admired ever since. Plus the flatirons are just plain fun. Backyard bouldering at it’s finest. It was a perfect day before heading east for my last semester of grad school. One day I’m going to climb that problem and it’s going to be great. I can’t WAIT to climb that boulder! Everything Marmot makes is AWESOME, check it out.
Aerial photos released following ABC’s FOIA request. Crazy. I was in N.Y. for this, but it didn’t look anything like it does in these photos. Nothing like aerials to give you a scary sense of vulnerability. I don’t quite understand why these photos weren’t released sooner, but I highly recommend checking the rest of them out on NPR’s site.

He made it!
OK, I admit I’m obsessed. But these things are amazing. Vision of perfection (pony) meets vision of childhood (StarWars)—it’s perfect! And for the record, these are screen shots, but in case you didn’t notice the url on every photo, I’m gonna give a shout out to the talented Marika Surinen, who created these amazing pony sculptures. Check her site out for more. Read more…
