White House News Photographers Association Announces 2010 Winners

Obama Prays for the Dead-President Barack Obama listens to the song Amazing Grace before speaking at III Corps & Fort Hood Memorial Ceremony at Fort Hood, Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 in Killeen, Texas. The thousands of people in attendance mourned the loss of the 13 killed in the shootings at Fort Hood. Some of the families of the dead as well as some of the injured attended the ceremony.
The WHPNA’s Eyes of History contest awarded the Washington Post’s Melina Mara first place in the Presidential category, for this photo. I asked Melina for advice at a shoot once and this is what she said: in 10 seconds, you should have 8 angles to shoot from. So, I’m guessing it took her about 2 seconds to envision this shot. Pretty impressive. Obama’s head looks so small and the helmet-gun-boot combo is so otherworldly it’s awesome. Other WPOW members also won awards, including Katie Falkenberg, Andrea Bruce, Carol Guzy, Alexis Glenn, Melissa Golden, Mary Calvert, Sarah L Voisin, Allison Shelley, Toni L Sandys, Astrid Reicken and Linda Davidson. Check out the winners on the WHPNA’s Eyes of History web site!
