On the last Tuesday of the first month of the new year, Green Drinks convened at the historic Hotel Boulderado — the perfect locale for a “Shining” remake in my opinion — for another round of high energy, semi work-related, sustainable fun. Please read the rest of the blog here, it’s funny.

Review: Mammut Stratus Hybrid Jacket

Mammut Stratus Hybrid Jacket

Last week, I test drove the Mammut Stratus Hybrid jacket during a week-long ice climbing adventure in the mountains of Colorado. Every day, from early morning until night, we searched for big icicles to climb, which meant long hours in very cold, wet conditions, with temperatures ranging from the teens to low 40s. This jacket kept me warm and dry, in a mix of precipitation – rain, ice, snow and slush, every day. Not only is the Stratus Hybrid powerfully windproof, it’s warm and rugged. I was positive it would rip or snag as I rubbed up on rough ice, snagged tree branches, perched against sharp rocks, but the jacket still looks brand new and it’s not even scratched. A vibrant rainbow of patterned spotlights swept across the swooping plywood walls – made specially for the event by Vertical Solutions – and the DJ pumped tunes while the last competitors trickled into isolation. When the lights dimmed and veteran MC Scott Meckler introduced the competitors who made it to finals, the crowd exploded the quiet buzz that been building all day. Read the rest of the story here!

Veterans Expeditions. Michael Ramsey - video still.

In the wee hours of Sept.11, 2010, a small team of combat veterans, ages 24-65, set out to climb Longs Peak, the highest mountain in Colorado’s Front Range. Together they headed up the dark trail, headlamps bobbing through the frosted morning. When sunrise torched the tip of Longs, they were still hours from the 14,259 ft. summit. Exhausted, but fueled with a group determination honed by years at war – Vietnam, Iraq and everywhere in between – they marched to the summit, signed the registry and looked out on the country they’d fought to protect. Pay phone at LAX, photo by Caroline Treadway.

You know those optical illusions where a hole appears convex or concave depending on how you look at it? I REALLY want to do that with my camera. Sooo, here are a couple tries. Thanks Jay Maisel!

Stuck at the airport? Try this.

Leaving LAX. Photo by Caroline Treadway.

You’ve probably been stranded in an airport at least once in your life. And if you flew somewhere this week, you’ve probably been stranded twice. So how do you pass the time in airport limbo where food costs twice as much and tastes twice as bad, and the only things to buy are cheesy sweatshirts, candy bars and chili pepper jelly? (Exception: duty-free shopping is awesome). Read the rest of the story on venturethere.com!
