The holiday season was packed with traveling, shooting, becoming an aunt and working on my new web site, which should be up and running in the next week.  I’m really excited about the new site and would love to hear your thoughts – I’m going for authentic and original, streamlined and sexy. Thanks to the design-savvy Sacha Halenda of FormFive! It will also link to instagram – my latest obsession. I can’t seem to get enough of that instant, at-your-fingertip inspiration!!

Adventure Film Festival, Boulder, Colorado.

The Feed Zone.

I’m super excited to see The Feed Zone in print! I had so much fun working with Biju and Allen on this project and now it’s a real live cookbook, hardback and all, with simple, delicious recipes and gorgeous photos – some of which are mine! The Feed Zone’s all about Biju’s kitchen skills and Allen’s training smarts combining to help cyclist Levi Leipheimer go from serious illness to the best physical condition of his life. It’s a perfect cookbook for athletes who like to push the limit and regular people, too. Get a copy of The Feed Zone here.

One of the coolest things about my job is that every project is different. Each assignment exposes me to new ideas, new people, new places, new ways to see life. I learned so much while shooting behind-the-scenes for this book. I learned how to cook amazing food. I learned about cycling. And I learned that when you fully dedicate yourself to a creative or physical pursuit, anything is possible. Between Biju, Allen and Levi, I felt lucky to be around such talent.

For me, the project started with spring training camp in Park City, Utah. The first morning, it snowed. Levi ate his usual breakfast – oatmeal with bananas, molasses and eggs – and scoured the weather sites for dry roads anywhere within driving distance. Beaver, a small town about three hours south, looked relatively snow-free, so we loaded the truck with food, water, Levi’s bikes and a moped, and headed south. It was snowing when we got there but Levi was hellbent on training, so Allen motorpaced him down the shoulder on I-15, with huge semis barreling by, til they found a winding mountain road that led to a ski resort. It was freezing. Levi rode hard and fast. We followed him for 6 more hours down empty roads leading vaguely back to Salt Lake. Then we ate at a Japanese place in Provo which could be the worst restaurant in the world.  It was kind of an epic first day.

This past June I assisted Portland-based photographer Boone Speed with a photo shoot in NYC for FILA. Boone’s not just a super talented artist and an all-around inspiring guy. He used to be a Fila-sponsored climber back in the day, which made the shoot – featuring the company’s newest athlete, pro climber Alex Puccio – that much more fitting. And Boone definitely knows how to shoot climbing, even in NYC.

We hit the city during the first hot week in June and spent two days searching for climbable, graphic spots, from Central Park to the southwest tip of Manhattan, where Alex could huck dynos in Fila flair and scramble up rocks in the new Skeletoes. We had a four to ten person crew at all times, hair and make-up, Boone’s agent Robin, John Lin from Fila and a bunch of other talented, creative and awesome people. It’s always good to see commercial interest in rock climbing from outside the industry.

Boone’s a pretty independent photographer. He shoots a subject when he sees it, intuitively and fast. I admire that kind of free form minimalism, a lot, but it also gave me time to and hang with Alex and bond with the crew, who were all psyched to ditch the office and work outside for two days.

A couple of really cool things happened on the Fila shoot. One, we got to show our permits to lots of park rangers. I’ve honestly never seen so many rangers in one hour. Two, we met the president of Fila, Chairman Yoon from Korea, which was very formal, a little intimidating and involved a lot of press.

It always amazes me how shoots come together – the chemistry, the psyche, the hard work, somehow it all gels into something that becomes creative and marketable. I think the success of a shoot depends on the success of the entire team working together. It’s awesome how well you get to know people in just two days of creative collaboration.

Green Runway’s debut last week at the Boulder Theater totally blew me away. I’d heard all about the Telluride Aids Benefit, the inspiration for Green Runway, so I knew it was gonna be good, but I had no idea it would be THIS good. It was awesome to see so many people come out to support  the Colorado designers and dancers who worked so hard to put the project together, not to mention New Era, the show’s sponsor. It was also super fun to shoot – action, fashion and killer music – what more could a girl ask for?  Check out my photo story on Green Runway here!!

Climbing Magazine - Perspective - Sam Elias

I wrote and shot this Perspective on Sam Elias in the current issue of Climbing. Psyched! Our two hour interview boiled down to half a page, whew! There were so many good quotes to choose from…I love Sam’s connected, honest approach to climbing, so refreshing.

Check out this video of our spring trip to Patagonia with The North Face ultrarunners Tracy Garneau and Hal Koerner. It was incredible to be part of this shoot, and super exciting to see the end result of our hard work. I can’t imagine a more perfect place to run, climb or test gear. Patagonia might be the most beautiful place in the world. Great job Camp4 Crew!
