Thousands Lay Wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery
Dec. 12, 2009-Thousands of volunteers descended on Arlington National Cemetery to place wreaths on graves of the nation’s fallen at the annual wreath-laying ceremony in Washington, D.C. Children, families and armed service members gathered in the chilly early morning to lay wreaths and wander through the vast expanse of white stones. Check out my photos and read Kase Wickman‘s story in the Bangor Daily News.
Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) was among the volunteers who placed wreaths. The annual wreath-laying ceremony holds a special place in the hearts of Mainers. Merrill Worcester and his Worcester Wreath Company, which donates thousands of balsam fir wreaths for the ceremony every year, are from Maine. Worcester first donated wreaths in 1992 and made a tradition out of it, which has inspired wreath-laying events nation-wide.
Wreaths Across America semis, packed with wreaths, stationed themselves throughout the cemetery. Official escorts John and Bunny O’Leary accompanied the semis from Maine to Washington, D.C.
