Thousands Lay Wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery

Dec. 12, 2009-Thousands of volunteers descended on Arlington National Cemetery to place wreaths on graves of the nation’s fallen at the annual wreath-laying ceremony in Washington, D.C. Children, families and armed service members gathered in the chilly early morning to lay wreaths and wander through the vast expanse of white stones. Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) was among the volunteers who placed wreaths. The annual wreath-laying ceremony holds a special place in the hearts of Mainers. Merrill Worcester and his Worcester Wreath Company, which donates thousands of balsam fir wreaths for the ceremony every year, are from Maine. Worcester first donated wreaths in 1992 and made a tradition out of it, which has inspired wreath-laying events nation-wide.

Wreaths Across America semis, packed with wreaths, stationed themselves throughout the cemetery. Official escorts John and Bunny O’Leary accompanied the semis from Maine to Washington, D.C.

Dec. 12, 2009-Bangor native Glen McGary, an officer with the Portland police department, takes a quiet moment after placing a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery's annual wreath-laying ceremony. Thousands of volunteers showed up for the event, including officers from the Portland police and fire departments, the Scarborough and Westbrook police departments.

    This has to be the most Heart Warming Story I have ever read. I saw this On Fox New Sunday Morning Dec. 19th and had to read the story for myself. Thank you so much Worcester Family.
