Last week, I test drove the Mammut Stratus Hybrid jacket during a week-long ice climbing adventure in the mountains of Colorado. Every day, from early morning until night, we searched for big icicles to climb, which meant long hours in very cold, wet conditions, with temperatures ranging from the teens to low 40s. This jacket kept me warm and dry, in a mix of precipitation – rain, ice, snow and slush, every day. Not only is the Stratus Hybrid powerfully windproof, it’s warm and rugged. I was positive it would rip or snag as I rubbed up on rough ice, snagged tree branches, perched against sharp rocks, but the jacket still looks brand new and it’s not even scratched. In her memoir Cartwheels in a Sari, Jayanti Tamm reveals her childhood as “the chosen one” in the spiritual cult of Sri Chinmoy. Chinmoy was an Indian guru known for spreading peace and lifting extremely heavy objects. His sari-swathed followers have included Carlos Santana and John Lennon, among others. Chinmoy died in Oct. 2007.
