Oahu’s Hidden Temple: Mu Ryang Sa

Doorway to the meditation hall at My Ryang Sa, a Korean Buddhist temple outside Honolulu, Hawaii. Photo by Caroline Treadway.

I flew to Oahu to rock climb and collaborate on an article for Deadpoint Magazine (coming out soon!) with Abbey Smith and Jason Kehl. But the second morning, we woke to heavy black skies and flash flood warnings via NOAA that quickly proved accurate. It was December, and though we’d heard rumors of possible rogue waves on the northwest short of Oahu, our destination, we hadn’t expected rain, and certainly not this violent onslaught of precipitation.Luckily Oahu is more than just beaches and maitais! 24 Hours in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, Argentina. Photo by Caroline Treadway.

Buenos Aires is the place to be if you like a. art. b. culture c. delicious food. d. shopping e. all-night tango sessions. f. any or all of the above. Since the Buenos Aires Ezeiza airport is an international hub with connecting flights to the continent’s more remote regions, if you’re traveling around South America, it’s likely you’ll find yourself in Buenos Aires. I recommend spending the night if you can. Over the past two weeks I’ve spent two nights – enroute to and from Patagonia – in Buenos Aires, and wish I’d had a lot more time to explore this romantic, art-filled city. Check out this mini guide to Buenos Aires for the best places to stay, eat and shop. Read the rest of the story on venturethere.com

Leaving LAX. Photo by Caroline Treadway.

You’ve probably been stranded in an airport at least once in your life. And if you flew somewhere this week, you’ve probably been stranded twice. So how do you pass the time in airport limbo where food costs twice as much and tastes twice as bad, and the only things to buy are cheesy sweatshirts, candy bars and chili pepper jelly? (Exception: duty-free shopping is awesome). Read the rest of the story on venturethere.com!

Turistas Gone Local: An Eco Vacation to Mal Pais, Costa Rica

costa4-222x300

The road to Mal Pais is dusty. It’s so dusty that the torso-sized leaves arcing over the road are gray-brown shapes against the blue sky. From the back of our taxi, Costa Rica looks little like the impossibly green jungle pictures in my travel book…
